Porcelain or ceramic is one of the newer products on the market and is becoming a popular choice in many homes.
Also known as ultra-compact, it can be produced in large sheets while still being thin and durable, allowing coverage of bigger areas without joins and making it suitable for large countertops, splashbacks, wet areas and fire surrounds that previously would not be as possible in
natural stone or
engineered stone. Porcelain is also weather resistant and so can be used outdoors for areas like pathways, or even swimming pool surrounds.
Porcelains have superior heat, scratch and stain resistance and can withstand moisture and climate changes.
Porcelain is made from a printed layer which is then baked in a kiln on a "biscuit" underneath. A wide variety of patterns can be printed, and many people choose a look similar to marble. There are now many porcelain ranges that look so close to natural materials that most people cannot tell the difference. Some porcelain can be “book-matched”, which means you can have the veins of the slabs matching up regardless of how your design fits together.
